There are many advantages to using a TENS unit for pain management in labor. A safe, non-invasive form of pain management, a TENS machine stimulates your body’s own endorphin release, helping to override your pain sensation in labor. Moms who have used TENS share that it allowed them to stay clear headed and move around freely during labor. Small and portable, it is simply carried in a pouch around your neck and connected to your back with small adhesive pads.

What is a TENS machine?
A TENS unit (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) is a non-invasive, drug-free method of controlling pain. It has been used for many years to help control acute and chronic pain, particularly when people are wishing to minimize their use of medication. Over the last 10 to 20 years women have been using TENS units as a means of managing pain during childbirth.
How does a TENS unit work in labor and birth?
The TENS unit consists of a battery powered stimulator and two pairs of electrodes with connecting leads. Mild electrical impulses pass through the skin and into the nerve fibers below; it can feel like a tingling sensation on your skin. The impulses help your body produce endorphins, your body’s natural way to fight pain. The intensity, rate and duration of the electrical impulses produced by the TENS unit can be controlled by the person using it.
Note: TENS units should not be used by women with cardiac problems, who have a pacemaker, bradycardia, or personal defibrillators. TENS units can not be used in water or near high heat and flammable gases.
